Al’s Deli (345 North Ave.) features the dramatic photos of Steve Barcan.
The Garwood Public Library (411 3rd Ave.) is showing the altered book by poet and artist, Amanda Berry. Ms. Berry describes her work in Holding Up the Day as a kind of reflective practice that began in 2020, combining her interests in poetry and visual arts. “The novel used for this altered book was one that I had read and found devastating. The pain and violence contained in the story were so troubling to me that I did not want to encourage anyone else to read it. I decided to create blackout poems that eliminated the sadness and looked for goodness on each page, usually by putting the words into new contexts. It was cathartic for me to cross out disturbing lines, but it also allowed me to see the hidden beauty. Finding glimpses of happiness was a way of transforming both the text and the time.”
Krissia Thaiane, fiber artist and member of GPAC, is showing her newest pieces at Borough Hall (403 South Ave.).
